Milford Sound, somewhat incorrectly named since it's actually a fjord, is quite simply incredible. I was supposed to be doing a days kayaking around the sound but the weather was so horrendous they put us on a cruise instead. There was rain, hail, snow and gales but all this made Milford Sound come alive in a way not often seen. Normally there are only 2 permanent waterfalls. Today because of the rain there were hundreds, icy water poured off the mountains everywhere you looked.
[The Four Sisters]
As well as being one of the wettest places in New Zealand, it's also a haven for wildlife like fur seals, dolphins, penguins & sometime the odd whale. Of course they were all being smart and hiding out from the rain, apart from 2 seals.
[The Disappearing Falls]
We were so lucky we got to see a seal feeding since they generally hunt at night. It basically just flung the fish around breaking all the bones and ripping chunks out. Lovely. But cool! Look at his little whiskers!
The rain did mean we couldn't see the tops of the mountains which was a pity because seeing Mitre Peak on a clear day is incredible...
Damn I wish I'd been on a calm day...
